I slowly opened my eyes while ignoring the pain in the side of my head, and I tried to breathe in slowly through my nostrils.

My entire body hurt, and I felt light, like all my aura had been sucked out of me beforehand. My eyes tried to adjust to the darkness, and I noticed Saraswati was on the ground and so was Artem.

I struggled to get on my feet, then I hurried to him. The tremors on our world had reduced, then wind in the air had chilled a little, and there was no longer a need to panic.

“Artem?” I called in a questioning voice, then lifted him off the ground and cradled his head in my arms. I shook him gently, trying to get him to respond, but nothing came

He was so cold in my arms, the light feathery touch of his skin on mine chilled me to the bones. Tears burned my eyes as I played out the worse possible scenario in my head.

Artem, I called again, but this time without speaking. What if something terrible had happened? What if he was….

I stopped myself from thinking such horrible thoughts and, as a tear slid down my cheeks, I inched my head closer to his and gently brushed my lips over his.

He stirred awake in my arms then, slowly opened his eyes, and gasped loudly awake.

“What happened?” I asked when he sat up, and slowly pushed away from me so he could sit on his own. Artem looked around, his hawkish eyes searched the perimeter around us, and once he spotted Saraswati, he crawled toward her in a hurry, put his hand on her chest, and lowered his head to check if she had a pulse.

“Is she alive?” I asked in a shaky voice. My lips and chin trembled, and I was sure the tremors coursing through me made the tendons on my neck stand out. My breath burst out of me harshly, and Artem kept his hands on Saraswati’s chest, closed his eyes, then inhaled deeply.

When he exhaled, Saraswati coughed, and jerked awake with speed. A loud gasp tore out of her lips as she sat up, and she looked from me to Artem, then asked, “What happened?”

Neither of us could tell what had happened. I remembered feeling intense pain in my head and chest when the Dark Knights called my name the first time, then it felt as if all the energy inside me had surged forward. Nothing else had mattered by the pain I felt until it consumed me, and I gave into the darkness.

“I passed out, but what happened to you two?”

Artem got on his feet and rubbed his forehead. “I tried to fight them back, but it felt like they were taking all of my energy. I passed out after that.”

Artem and I looked to Saraswati, and she shrugged. “I don’t remember anything besides you dropping to the ground,” she said to me.

Just then my chest started to burn. I groaned, crouched forward, and put a hand on my chest to massage it.
